Surfdale Beach on Waiheke Island

Surfdale beach is one of the tidal mudflats located in Huruhi Bay on the south side of the island. It is often breezy due to the prevailing southerly wind, which makes it a favourite spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Being a calm beach, high tide allows the opportunity for swimming, but this is not one of Waiheke’s best swimming spots as being mudflats, it can be prone to sea-lice.

Local facilities are located further a field than the beach. Within a few minutes walk you will find Miami Road, on which is a small cluster of  amenities which include Surfdale’s pizzeria, bakery, diary, hairdresser, licensed pub, and the public toilets. The majority of Waiheke buses (with the exception of the Palm Beach bus) run along Miami Road so Surfdale is well supported by local transport.

Dogs on Surfdale Beach

There is a seasonal council rule in place for dogs on the beach. The rule for Surfdale beach and foreshore areas state that dogs are allowed on Surfdale Beach eastward of Blake Street and excluding Hooks Lane Beach during the dates below.

Dogs must be on leash covering all beach and foreshore areas westward of Moa Avenue at all times.

Seasonal rule:

From 1 December to 1 March. On public holidays and weekends between Labour weekend and Easter weekend.

10am to 5pm – Prohibited
Before 10am and after 5pm – Under control, off the leash.
All other times – Under control, off the leash.

Always follow the rules on park signs even if the information we have online does not match them.
