As the name suggests, it is a sandy, shallow bay which offers safe swimming.
Sandy Bay is a secluded spot on the north side of the island and being ‘off-the-beaten-track’ it is often less populated than Oneroa, Palm Beach, and Onetangi.
Sandy Bay is the only north side beach with a boat ramp, it has public toilets, a picnic table, and a small parking area. If you wish to get here via public transport from Matiatia Ferry terminal you will need to take the number 502, Palm Beach/ Rocky Bay bus, and get off at 38 Hauraki Road. A 10-minute walk down Karaka road and onto Coromandel Road will take you down to Sandy Bay.
