Hekerua Bay is a secluded, stony little bay accessible by either boat or foot.
If walking, you can take one of several tracks – either from Sandy Bay, or from Te Aroha Ave, which is referred to as a ‘paper-road’ – meaning that it exists as a road in name only. Te Aroha Ave is actually a leafy walking track and is accessible from Karaka Rd. There is also a sealed path called the zig-zag path, which is considerably steeper than the Te Aroha track. The Zig-Zag path is accessible from the corner of Goodwin Ave and Queens Drive.
Being secluded and less visited, Hekerua Bay does not offer any amenities. It is a lovely place to take a picnic to, particularly if you wish to escape the larger number of visitors at Waihekes’ larger northern beaches.
The closest public toilets are located at nearby Sandy Bay. If you are getting here via public transport you can take the Number 2 bus, Matiatia to Rocky Bay, and get off at the corner of Goodwin Place and Queens Drive, you can then take the zig-zag path down to Hekerua Bay.
