Stay - Camping on Waiheke

Camping on Waiheke Island is often at the Waiheke campground at Poukaraka Flats in Whakanewha Regional Park and is a very worthwhile experience.

To really do justice in describing the appeal of this campground we would need to build a dedicated website, however we think the following will be enough to convince you to make the trip.

Poukaraka Flats is an accessible, large, flat campground set back from a beautiful bay and child-friendly beach within Whakanewha Regional Park. It offers a number of places to explore and escape from washing up duties. You will find that the camping areas are sheltered by native plantings helping ensure any bird watchers get tent side viewing and to top it off the park rangers give all comers a friendly island welcome.

Still not enough, in 2008 the Waiheke campground was voted number one in New Zealand according to the New Zealand Herald and Waiheke Island is one of the top 10 Holiday destinations in the world. Here is a secret tip – plan a stay during the months of March, April and May (not only do you get a good chance of settled warm weather you might even get the place to yourself).

Camping on Waiheke at the campground is available all year and bookings can be made 6 months in advance. Please note that booking hours for regional parks operate from 8.00am – 7.00pm Monday through to Sunday for SCC campgrounds, SCC parking areas, baches, and bookable sites. No bookings can be taken over the phone or in person within the park after this time and no cash payments are available at any time in the park.

It is important to note that for health and safety reasons, bookings for groups of people aged 15 years and under are not allowed without appropriate supervision. You will also need consent to make a campground booking when your group is aged between 16 and 17 years.

• Rubbish: All our regional parks are rubbish free. Whether you call it rubbish, trash or garbage, please bag it all up and recycle it or throw it away when you return home

Security:

Drive into the park along Gordons Road over the hill. At the bottom of the hill and to the right is the entrance to the campground.

• Pedestrian access – 24 hours
• Gate access summer – 8am to 9pm
• Gate access winter – 8am to 7pm

Theft from vehicles is not common but unfortunately can happen. You should take the same reasonable precautions you take when parking at other locations and remember to lock your vehicle and take your valuables with you.
